FamilySearch.org - This free website is sponsored by the LDS (Mormon) Church. It is continually updated and offers many tips and resources for starting genealogy research, including tutorials, searchable indexes, and databases and sources from the United States and around the world.

FindAGrave.com - Free site to research and look for ancestor's grave stones.
Ancestry.com - This web site is subscription based, but access is free of charge at any NARA research facility, at most county and state libraries and most Family History Centers. It contains many collections of records, including newspapers and periodicals; birth, marriage and death records, obituary collections; city directories; court, lad, wills and financial records; military records; published local and county histories; and census/voter lists.

Heritage Quest - This web site is subscription based and is accessed through a library or at any NARA research facility. It has federal census records 1790-1930, many family and local histories, the United States Serial Set and indexes to general and local history articles.

GenForum.com - This is a free website that provides read only bulletin boards for surnames, U.S. states, countries, immigration, wars and others.
Rootsweb - This website is a free collection of databases, family trees, mailing lists, message boards, websites and resources.
US Gen Web Archives - This website provides access to a wide range of free volunteer created genealogy data for every county and state of the United States.
The Internet Archives - Access to this digital library is free to researchers, historians, scholars and the general public. It is a digital library of internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Texts include genealogies, local histories, published records, sources and many valuable genealogical documents.
Google Books - This is a searchable database of books, including genealogies, records and local histories. Some books are in digital format. Others provide information for acquiring the book.
Cyndi's List - This is a free website that provides a comprehensive, categorized and cross-referenced list of links that point to genealogical research sites.
One-Step Webpages by Stephen P. Morse - This site contains tools for finding immigration records, census records, vital records and for dealing with calendars, maps, foreign alphabets, and numerous other resources.
Ellis Island - Explore the vast database of 51,000 million plus passenger records by searching for your ancestor.
National Archives and Records Administration - The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation's record keeper. Valuable records are preserved and available to you, whether you want to see if they contain clues about your family’s history, need to prove a veteran’s military service, or are researching an historical topic that interests you. NARA provides numerous resources to help you research your family history. This may be done, online or at one of the regional NARA centers near you.
Sacramento German Genealogy Society - California resource for those researching their German immigrant ancestors. Site contains helpful links for researching and the SGGS provides monthly programs and a Spring Seminar for German researchers.
